Telehandler overview
A telehandler, short for telescopic handler, is a versatile piece of equipment widely used in construction, agriculture, and industrial settings. It combines the functions of a forklift, crane, and work platform into one machine. Equipped with a telescoping boom, the telehandler can lift, move, and place materials at heights and distances that typical forklifts cannot reach.
N010 Telehandler – course objectives
As a plant operator, it is important to have a basic understanding of the industry, including the potential dangers involved, and be aware of your responsibilities. You should also have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the specific machine you are using, along with any other relevant information sources.
Operators must be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions. It is equally important to know and understand the steering, driving, and braking controls, as well as their respective functions.
Before operating the machine, you must conduct all pre-operational checks according to both the manufacturer’s guidelines and legal requirements. Safely mounting and dismounting the machine is essential, as is knowing how to start and stop the engine, move the machine safely, and bring it to a stop properly.
You should be able to configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely, both when laden and unladen, over various terrains, including rough ground and inclines, in both open and confined areas. Before starting work, you must perform all necessary safety checks at the site.
Once the machine is in the work area, configure it properly to carry out lifting and load-handling tasks. You will need to safely lift and transfer loads at different locations and securely load and unload external transport vehicles.
Being able to fit, adjust, or remove attachments is also crucial. Additionally, you should demonstrate an understanding of the procedures for safely loading and unloading the machine for transportation. Finally, at the end of your shift, ensure all shutdown procedures are carried out correctly.
